If you don’t know the history of the 5 Grand Sports covertly built to compete with the early 60’s Cobras, then you should
read up on it even if this is not the car for you. Here is a quick read about some really cool American racing history
regarding this Grand Sport racing program and how the program was halted when Chevy found out about it.
It is very unique that this car is VIN #3 and painted in the blue and white #2 racing scheme like the original chassis #3 in
the same color scheme. Some of the early D&D replicas did not have VIN #’s so this is not actually the 3rd car they made
but is the 3rd one since they started assigning VINs. This 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe is a fabulous recreation of the
3rd of 5 Grand Sport racers designed to compete with Carroll Shelby’s Cobras. Secretly built by Corvette Engineer Zora
Arkus-Duntov, the Grand Sport was based on a reliable, light and very strong tubular frame using the new Sting Ray’s
suspension.
D&D Corvettes and Mongoose both were gaining traction on building these iconic replicas when GM took legal action
and successfully shut them and a few smaller producers down. D&D produced 136 of these replicas before that
happened. It is estimated that only 22 of them have known whereabouts and many have likely been shipped out of the
country. At D&D, the replica fiberglass molds and tubular frame design assistance came from John Adams who was able
to keep one of the original 5 Grand Sports and made a deal with Dean Hoskin’s of D&D to offer up his car to replicate in
exchange for restoring his car.
This is an incredibly rare car! In addition, it only has 61 miles on it since it was built in the mid 1990’s. Including the
engine, transmission, frame and color scheme this car is as close as any has ever been made to the original car.
